Ask any Utah resident and they’ll
tell you that Pioneer Day is the holiday that invokes in them a sense of pride
like no other day of the year.
Celebrated on July 24, Pioneer Day commemorates the state’s Pioneer Era,
which began with the entry of Brigham Young and the first group of Mormon
pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, and which is generally considered
to have ended in 1869 with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad.
Although
it is an official state holiday celebrated by all Utah citizens, Pioneer Day
holds special significance for Utah’s Mormons. The event is commemorated from
dawn-to-dark with historical reenactments, songs, dances, BBQs, potlucks,
story-telling and other pioneer related activities. But everybody’s favorite
events are the evening fireworks. And the mid-day parade. No surprise there. Because everybody loves a parade. And Logan does a good one. Wholesome, and chock-a-block with
enough sequin and sparkle-bedecked float queens to give the Tournament of Roses
a shivering fear of inferiority.
